So how can a neck injury be causing chronic headaches and migraine pain?
There are two reasons for this… 

Firstly, is because of the brain stem. 

The brain stem, which can be compared to a telephone cable with thousands of individual wires or nerve fibers sending signals between the brain and the body and controls nearly all vital bodily function.  An injury to the neck will cause misalignments in the upper cervical spine (upper neck), and it’s these injuries that can affect the function of the brain stem. 

Dr. Seymour Diamond, Executive Director of the National Headache Foundation, have identified what they believe is the cause of Migraine pain: a malfunctioning brain stem. When the brain stem (located near the top of the neck) malfunctions, it increases the swelling of blood vessels surrounding the brain, setting up a chain reaction that results in a migraine headache.

Secondly, is because of body imbalance.

A trauma to the upper neck can cause a shift in the relationship of the head and neck.  This imbalance of the head on the spine not only puts pressure on the nerves that go into the head and face, it also causes the muscles at the base of the skull to draw up and tighten producing what is known as “Cervicogenic Headaches.”  These Cervicogenic Headaches have been found to be the primary cause of many headache sufferers pain, even if there is little or no pain present in the neck.      

I want you to think back for a second, maybe one, two, three even ten years back. Do you ever remembering playing rough house with your kids? Playing football or falling down diving for a softball, or even falling on the basketball court or in the yard?  Have you been in a car accident?
